The beginning

Several years ago, I had a dream. I was racing up winding steps in a dark tower with a young man. I didn't know who he was, I only knew that we loved each other, that we would do anything to be together. Chased by an unknown threat, we ran. The steps ended, spilling us out into a tower room with no wall - only the raging sea before us and our attackers behind. With nothing else to do, we jumped.

That was how my novel Dernketh - the Broken Island began, a dream that even after I'd woken, stayed with me, the feeling of that fear, that love, that terrible fall. I wrote a song for the characters and the first chapter and swore I'd return to it one day and focused on becoming an artist.

But the story ached at me, burning me from inside out, even when I was happy and loving my job as an artist with all my heart, the story called to me, like a siren I couldn't resist it's call anymore. I wrote and wrote and drew and drew. Months went by, years, each time the story called me. I dreamt of the characters again, in that dark tower. And when I struggled with the ending, I found the answers in a daydream. The perfect circle.

And now it is ready to be released to the world and I am both electrified, terrified and high fiving my six year old self whose dream was to become a best selling author and to fill the world with her stories and characters.

If you are reading this and you feel that burning feeling to write or draw or create, or whatever your dream is - then take this as your sign - do it, just as I have. It doesn't matter what age you are, if the dream is a few weeks old or years. Just go for it and jump for your dream.
